The Toyota Calya Conversion Project was initiated as part of the objective to develop an affordable electric passenger car in 2020. In partnership with PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), the Toyota Calya model was selected for conversion from a conventional internal combustion engine to a battery-electric powertrain.

Four-wheeled passenger vehicles present significant technical challenges for conversion, as numerous vehicle safety systems and regulatory requirements must be addressed. Beyond basic functionality, the converted vehicle must comply with internationally recognized vehicle safety standards. For practical daily use, the conversion system must also be compatible with Indonesia’s public charging infrastructure (SPKLU).
The Toyota Calya was selected due to its affordability and widespread use in Indonesia, with the intention of promoting sustainable mobility solutions to a broader segment of the population. Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Toyota Indonesia collaborated with the long-term goal of supporting the adoption of vehicle conversion programs at a national scale, contributing to the growth of electric vehicle deployment in Indonesia.
